                               MEDIA RELEASE 2010

2010 OTTAWA SUPEREX

2010 Ottawa SuperEX Celebrated 122 Years of History August 19th to August 29th, 2010.  Inclement weather was a factor in the size of our crowds with rain or showers on the first seven days of the event, resulting in a decrease those particular days over 2009 visits.

The weather was fantastic for our final weekend, Friday, August 27th through Sunday, August 29th, 2010, which allowed SuperEX to do some catching up, resulting in only a 7% decrease in visits from 2009.   Total visits for the 2010 Ottawa SuperEX were 392,510.

“Overall we are very happy for the support shown by the community as they all returned to this year’s SuperEX to help us reminisce and to celebrate all we had to offer”, said C.C.E.A. President, Lyn Presley.

SuperEX will make an announcement later this fall regarding SuperEX 2011.

To the media who covered and supported the 2010 SuperEX this year, thank you so much for your continued support.

STAMPEDERS AT SUPEREX

The Pizza Pizza Free Concert Series presented by Pizza Pizza, OLG, CTV and Metro includes a wide variety of talented and exciting list of performers almost every day during the SuperEX.

Juno Award winning classic rock band, The Stampeders hit the Pizza Pizza Free Concert Series Stage at 9:00p.m. Saturday, August 28th - No seventies group represented Canada's musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada's music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country's international musical ambassadors. Instead of trying to blend into any specific format, they developed their own identity, which was both entertaining to watch in concert, and to listen to on radio and records. The Stampeders also toured more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group of the same period.

Openers Sticks'n Stones hit the stage at 8:00p.m. - They play a rollicking, up-tempo brand of rock n’ roll, doing covers from Meatloaf to Mellencamp.  They have opened for Tom Cochrane, Trooper and Nazareth.

All shows on the Pizza Pizza Free Concert Series Stage are free with your admission to the 2010 SuperEX!

MRC PONTIAC DAY AT SUPEREX

Drop by the 2010 Ottawa SuperEX Thursday, August 26th to find out about the MRC Pontiac region.  It’s located in the Western part of Quebec’s Outaouais region.  Its vast territory includes eighteen municipalities spread over 4,178km and an unorganized territory of 9,670km.  Only the municipalities have a permanent population (fewer than 15,000 residents), concentrated mainly from east to west along the Ottawa River. Like several Quebec regions, Pontiac experienced a demographic drop in the late 1990s, but the population has been stable since 2001.

For more than 150, the Pontiac economy depended mainly on forest products. The recent forestry crisis, which reached its height in 2008, was the stimulant for economic diversification.

Currently undergoing profound changes, Pontiac MRC has undertaken a strategic process to determine socio-economic development niches. This process is taking place in the context of the Pontiac region’s economic diversification in the natural resources value-added processing and agri-food sectors, and the tourism industry.  The region’s natural wealth and human capital are its primary assets.

Colonized by the English, Irish, Scots, Germans, Poles and French, Pontiac is a true cultural mosaic.  57% of Pontiac residents are Anglophones, and 41% are Francophones. There are more than 10 religions represented, including Catholics (70%) and Protestants (25%).

Pontiac has a very attractive architectural and natural heritage. Growing numbers of vacationers from all over the world visit the area and have wonderful memories of those visits. Our rivers (including the imposing Ottawa), 4,000 lakes, varied and abundant wildlife and a built heritage as diverse as our culture together form a lively, colourful and unforgettable portrait of our area.

Come out and learn more about tourism, culture and diversity of this beautiful area on Thursday, August 26th.

ORGANIC DONKEY DUNG ORGANIC FERTILIZER ORNAMENTS

AT SUPEREX

Artist Anna Grilli, aka “Terra Tashi” hand crafts small donkeys, cats and symbolic ornaments using donkey dung as the main ingredient in her organic plant fertilizers.

These artistic ornaments are functional flowerbox decorations, they not only look cute but they are virtually odourless and decompose slowly over a period of a year or so, fertilizing the soil for healthy plants and flowers.

They can be used for outdoor gardens, bushes to indoor plants. They will make a huge difference to your garden and will help make your gardening easier!

Terra Tashi worked for months to develop a perfect dung-minerals texture combination.  She spent a few years researching dung mixing techniques in India and South East Asia. She also researched sculpting techniques and finally chose to handcraft each piece she makes to represent a “one of a kind” product and promote her two rare and endangered Baudet du Poitou donkeys, Rosalie and Pitoufu, who are fed organic hay and carrots.

The making of these ornaments requires mixing fresh donkey dung with water and consisted proportions of clay, dolomitic limestone powder, kelp meal, and diatomaceous earth.  The process includes a drying period of one to three weeks to complete the statues to become odourless and cured.  All additional minerals are certified organic from Homestead Organics, in Berwick, Ontario.

These organic artistic ornaments can be purchased in the RONA Pure Country Pavilion August 28th and August 29th

RONA PURE COUNTRY PAVILION

The RONA Pure Country Pavilion educates SuperEX fairgoers about their agricultural roots through exhibits and animals.

The show ring features the Canadian Raptor Conservancy featuring live, free-flights demonstrations.  As each bird is flying, the handler gives an educational commentary about each species. This unique encounter with nature’s flying hunters might include: the birds with the best night vision, able to spot its prey 20kms away; the only species of hawk that hunts in a pack like wolves; the bird of prey that has the most highly developed sense of smell in the world – even better than a bloodhound; and more!

Motivational Response Training by Greg Barrington.  For centuries “Horse Whispering” has been a generic name to describe techniques used in the training of horses.  His basic principals are motivation, stimulus, response and reward. It is a beautiful sight to see Greg interact with a horse as they become one.

Tom Redpath is a New Zealand trained sheep Shearer with over 30 years of experience.  He is the most in demand Shearer in Canada.  His sheep shearing is a sight to behold with his technique and running commentary, as he has no equals.  You will walk away from Tom’s demonstration with a new respect for where your beautiful wool sweater and warm socks come from.

The RCMP will be showcasing two Royal Canadian Mounted Police with their famous horses, direct from Parliament Hill.  The public will be able to ask questions, touch the horses and take pictures. Showring demonstrations will be presented on Tuesday, August 24th and Thursday, August 26th.

4-H Competitions award cash prizes to the youth placing highest in each category including beef, dairy, sheep and horse. The 4-H Program entails opportunities, personal development, making friends and having fun while helping young people ages ten to twenty-one learn self-confidence and new skills.

Most demonstrations have three shows daily, unless otherwise specified.
